The Halifax Airport also known as Halifax Robert L. Stanfield Int’l Airport is located in Enfield, Nova Scotia, Canada. This airport serves regional municipality of Halifax, Nova Scotia and some neighboring Maritime provinces. The owner of the airport is the Transport Canada and it was constructed and started to operate in 2000. The HIAA or Halifax Int’l Airport Authority is a member of National Airports System of Canada. The headquarters of CanJet and Jazz Air are hosted by this airport. It is considered as Canada’s seventh busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic.

The original name of this airport “Halifax International Airport” was changed in 2005 to “Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport”. It was named after Robert L. Stanfield who is the former Official Opposition’s federal leader and Nova Scotia’s Premier. The official announcement of the renaming of this airport was headed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper during his arrival at the airport on a Friday dated 9th of February, 2007.

As for awards, the airport has received praises from the critics and customers. It even fared well in the AETRA Survey conducted in 2005 for the satisfaction of passengers. This survey was produced by Airports Council International and International Air Transport Association. It was also entitled as the best airport in America in a row for the 2nd year and as the best airport under the category of “less than five million passengers annually” in a row for the third year worldwide. It was also ranked as the best domestic airport in a row for the second year. It also won two first-place awards in March 2007 in the 2006 Service Quality Awards of the Airports Council International that was held in Dubai, UAE. It also ranked number one in the worldwide airport passenger satisfaction in the below five million passengers category for the 4th consecutive year. Additionally, it also won the first place in the Airport People Awards Category in the Americas and the second place for the best domestic airport in the world. For the 7th consecutive year in early 2010, the passengers rated this airport as the World’s Best Airport in the same category.

Originally, the terminal building of the Halifax Airport was officially opened in September of the year 1960. Presently, it serves a total of more than 3.5 million passengers annually and still growing. Oftentimes, construction and renovations are visible in the airport due to the increasing passenger traffic. The airport has continuously been undergoing a program for extensive renovation since 1998. Their major expansions projects include the rehabilitation of the runways and taxiways, expansion of new terminal, new parking facilities, a new hotel and interior design modifications which include the observation or watch tower. The estimated total cost of these major project amounts more than $250 million. These projects have already been completed in 2010.
